Aztec Blessings for Santana winds
96″x 48″x 36″ Oil on wood
This concept came together because of two events in my life. The first is the story my grandmother told me when I was a little chaparrito about the Santa Ana winds. The name of the winds we use today to describe the Santa Ana winds were lost in translation; the original name was not two-words Santa Ana but one word Santana (Satan). Vientos de Santana (Satan’s winds). The hot devil’s wind coming from the desert brings dark energy in their wake. The concept for this piece was completed when I sought out an Aztec witch doctor and spent months witnessing his rituals and the tools he uses. This painting is about the story about the Easterly winds we get on the West Coast of California and what I witnessed during my time with my Curandero and the tools he uses to fight off dark energies.
